Grand Bahama Island

Our Lucaya Beach & Golf Resort

  We were cordially invited on December 12, 2000 for the inaugural flight of AirTrans new non-stop flight to Grand Bahama Island.  Daily service from Atlanta leaves at 10:00 am arriving GBI at 11:43 am, just in time for a Caribbean lunch.  Departures leave GBI at 12:35 p.m. and arrive in Atlanta at 2:16 p.m.  One of the features that appeals to us is that when you leave GBI, you go through US Customs there, meaning you don't have to do it in Atlanta.  Our over-night stay was sponsored in part by the Our Lucaya Beach & Golf Resort. This resort was a combination of 2 resorts and was completely demolished to be rebuilt like "Atlantis rising from the beach". This wide-spread property is split into 3 sections, each section self contained with it's own restaurants, bars and pools.  But you can enjoy all the sections and their amenities.

  Reef Village is the only all-inclusive section of Our Lucaya that caters to the traveler that does not want any extra surprises upon checkout. All meals, drinks and snacks are included in the Reef Village. 
  The Breakers Cay section is a 10 story high-rise section that has the most rooms facing the ocean. All rooms have balconies.
  Lighthouse Pointe is the quaint section of the resort offering views of the Marina and the fabulous beach area. We enjoyed the resort, and with an over-whelming 1,350 guest rooms and suites combined in all 3 sections, you are not on top of each other.

  We found a great lil "fish shack" that no one visiting Grand Bahama Island should miss.  Billie Joe's is on the beach, not hard to find from the Sugar Mill Pool off the Reef Village section.  You have to try the fresh fish of the day or the fresh conch salad.

         We had a great time though it was only 24 hours!
  We can't wait to go back and try the Reef Course where the Senior PGA tournament was held in November. They also have the only other Butch Harmon School of Golf.  Learn golf tips from the teachers that teach the pros Tiger Woods and Greg Norman.
  And after all that golf...the Senses Spa...ahh!
